Program Overview

Before a patient can be operated on safely, an anaesthetist must be able to put them to sleep, keep them breathing, watch their heart and blood pressure and wake them up again. All of this needs equipment that has been prepared and checked in advance. Anaesthesia technicians make sure that the machines, airway tools and monitors are ready, clean and working.

The Anesthesia Technician diploma at YES is a one year program that prepares students to assist the anaesthetist in the operation theatre and recovery area. It begins with the basic anatomy of the airway, lungs and heart, then introduces the anaesthesia machine and its safety checks, patient monitors, and the trolley of drugs and supplies used in a typical case.

Students learn the names and uses of common airway equipment, such as laryngoscopes, endotracheal tubes and masks, and how these are cleaned and sterilised between patients. They learn how patients are received and positioned, how monitoring equipment is applied, and what to observe in the recovery room after the operation has finished.

As with other theatre roles, the technician works under the direction of the anaesthetist. Choices about drugs, doses and techniques belong to the qualified doctor, and students are taught to respect that boundary and to speak up quickly when they notice something unusual.

  • Observation in the recovery area and basic emergency response
  • Documentation, communication and theatre discipline

Practical Training

Training concentrates on equipment readiness and routine: assembling and checking the machine, preparing airway sets and applying monitors. These tasks are practised repeatedly, because in the theatre the equipment must work the first time.

Where Graduates Look for Work

Anaesthesia support staff are employed wherever surgery is performed. Duties depend on the hospital and the supervising anaesthetist.
