Physiotherapy helps people recover movement, strength and independence after an injury, an operation, a stroke or a long illness, and it helps others manage ongoing pain in the back, neck and joints. A physiotherapy technician works as part of that care team, carrying out treatment programs and exercises that have been planned for the patient.
The Physiotherapy Technician diploma at YES is a two year program, longer than most of our courses because the subject needs time to learn well. Students start with the structure and function of the body, especially bones, joints, muscles and nerves, and then move on to the principles of exercise therapy, massage, and the use of common therapy equipment.
Over the two years students learn how to help patients with range of motion and strengthening exercises, how to support walking and balance training, how to apply heat, cold and electrotherapy modalities such as TENS and ultrasound therapy under instruction, and how to position and handle patients safely. They also learn to observe how a patient responds, and to report changes to the supervising physiotherapist or doctor.
It is important to understand the scope of this qualification. A physiotherapy technician works under the guidance of a qualified physiotherapist or doctor. Independent practice as a physiotherapist normally requires a professional degree, so students who want to go further should plan for that before they enrol.
Students practise techniques on each other and on patients under supervision, so that they gain confidence in handling people, giving clear exercise instructions and using clinic equipment safely.
Physiotherapy assistants and technicians are employed where rehabilitation is offered. The tasks you may perform depend on the employer and the supervising therapist.
This program suits patient, hands-on people who like helping others regain independence and who are comfortable with close physical contact with patients. It is also a good way to test your interest before deciding on a longer degree.
