Hospital wards run on the daily care that nurses and their assistants give to patients: helping someone wash, move, eat and rest, checking their temperature and pulse, keeping their bed and surroundings clean and noticing when something changes. A nursing assistant supports the nursing team with this essential work.
The Nursing Assistant diploma at YES is a one year program that trains students for exactly these duties. It starts with basic anatomy and the principles of infection control, then teaches the routine skills of patient care: bed making, personal hygiene, assisting with feeding and mobility, taking and recording vital signs, and helping patients who are unwell or frail.
Students also learn the everyday communication skills that make a real difference on a ward: how to speak to an anxious patient, how to respect privacy and dignity, how to work with a family, and how to report changes to the nurse in charge. The course introduces the basics of first aid, medication safety awareness (assisting the nurse, not prescribing or deciding doses), and the correct handling of hospital waste and linen.
A nursing assistant is not a registered nurse. Nursing registration and clinical nursing duties require a separate nursing qualification. This diploma is a practical entry point into patient care and can be a first step for those who later choose to study nursing.
Students rehearse ward routines in a skills setting, such as making a bed with a patient in it, moving someone from bed to chair and recording vital signs, before doing these tasks with real patients under supervision.
Nursing assistants are needed wherever patients need daily care. Duties and requirements differ between employers.
