Program Overview

Ultrasound is one of the most widely used imaging tools in medicine. It uses sound waves rather than radiation, which makes it suitable for checking a baby during pregnancy, looking at the liver, kidneys and gallbladder, and guiding many simple investigations. Ultrasound technicians operate the machine, prepare the patient and capture the images that the doctor uses to reach a diagnosis.

The Ultrasound Technician diploma at YES is a one year program. It begins with the anatomy that appears on an ultrasound screen, and with the basic physics of how ultrasound works, presented in plain language. Students then learn how the machine is set up, how the different probes are used, and how the controls change the picture.

The practical part of the course focuses on scanning technique and patient handling: preparing the patient for an abdominal, pelvic or obstetric scan, positioning the probe, capturing clear images, labelling and storing them, and keeping the machine clean and safe. Students also learn professional boundaries, including privacy, consent and how to speak with patients who are anxious about their results.

The diagnostic report is written by a qualified doctor, usually a radiologist. The technician's job is to obtain good quality images and to assist with the examination, and it is important for students to understand this scope from the start.
