Program Overview

Almost every important medical decision begins with a test. Doctors rely on blood counts, sugar levels, cultures, urine reports and dozens of other results to diagnose illness and to decide whether a treatment is working. Lab technicians are the people who collect the samples, run the tests and produce the reports, and a small error at any stage can lead to a wrong diagnosis.

The Lab Technician diploma at YES is a one year program built around this responsibility. Students begin with laboratory safety and basic anatomy, then learn how to collect blood and other specimens correctly, how to label and store them, and how to perform the routine tests that hospitals and diagnostic laboratories run every day.

The course covers the main areas of a clinical laboratory: haematology (blood cells and clotting), clinical chemistry (glucose, liver, kidney and lipid tests), urine and stool examination, microbiology and serology. Students learn to use the microscope, centrifuge and other common equipment, to prepare slides and reagents, and to record results accurately.

Quality is a theme throughout. A good lab technician follows procedures exactly, checks equipment, understands why a sample may be unsuitable, and knows when a result looks unusual enough to repeat before it is released.

Practical Training

Students practise on real laboratory procedures, from preparing slides to running tests and recording results. Repeating techniques such as sample handling and staining builds the accuracy and speed that employers expect.
