Program Overview

The intensive care unit looks after the most seriously ill patients in a hospital, people who are on ventilators, who have had major surgery or who cannot yet breathe, circulate blood or maintain their own body functions without help. Care in an ICU depends on machines, close monitoring and a team that never stops watching.

The I.C.U. Technician diploma at YES is a one year program that prepares students to assist that team. It begins with the anatomy and physiology of the heart, lungs and other vital systems, and then introduces the equipment used in critical care: bedside monitors, infusion pumps, oxygen delivery devices, suction machines and, at an introductory level, ventilators.

Students learn what the numbers and waveforms on a monitor mean, how to set up and check equipment, what to do when an alarm sounds, and how to tell the nurse or doctor about a change quickly and clearly. They also learn the routines that keep ICU patients safe, such as infection control, patient positioning to prevent pressure sores, and preparation for procedures like inserting lines or tubes.

The technician is an assistant to the critical care team and works under the instruction of doctors and ICU nurses. Decisions about treatment and medication settings are made by qualified clinicians.

  • Documentation and handover between shifts

Practical Training

Practice focuses on becoming comfortable with the equipment, since an ICU technician needs to set up, check and troubleshoot devices quickly. Students also rehearse emergency response drills so that the steps are clear if a patient's condition changes.
