Program Overview

An operation theatre is one of the most tightly controlled places in a hospital. Everything in it, from the instruments to the air and the surfaces, has to be clean and ready at the right moment, because a small lapse can cause an infection or delay a surgery. Operation theatre technicians are the people who keep this environment running.

The O.T. Technician diploma at YES is a one year program that prepares students for this role. It starts with the basics of anatomy and the principles of asepsis, meaning how to keep a sterile field sterile, and then moves on to the practical work of the theatre team.

Students learn how instruments are named, sorted, cleaned, packed and sterilised, how an autoclave is used and checked, and how trays and sets are prepared for different types of operation. They learn how patients are received, identified and positioned, how the theatre is set up and turned over between cases, and how the team counts swabs and instruments before and after a procedure. They also learn theatre etiquette, such as scrubbing, gowning and gloving correctly and moving through the theatre without contaminating anything.

The course aims to give students a solid understanding of what happens before, during and after a surgery, so that they can work reliably as members of the surgical team under the supervision of surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre nurses.

Practical Training

Practical sessions focus on the routines that a theatre depends on: setting up a sterile field, preparing trays and processing instruments correctly. These are repeated until students can perform them reliably and calmly.
